Title: A doll’s house is……, 2007
Video
Duration: 7’07”

Note: The numbers that appear on the screen indicate where a motion will occur. I use this device so that viewers can better follow the sequence and order of events in a complex scene.

The world is not still. Reality is dynamic.

a doll’s house is…… is a work which explores the artistic connection between movement that occurs in an apartment building, other units in that building and the exterior world. It shows that each motion, whether it is made by human, animal, object, light or sound, is connected and extended by other motions to compose a phrase, a sentence of great artistic interest.
For example, a man is exercising in his apartment. As he makes one gesture, another gesture is made in an apartment next to his-which is connected to a light which gets turned on in another part of the building-which is connected to a sound which occurs somewhere else. Each movement by itself is meaningless, boring, cliched. But seen as one component of a larger artistic phenomenon, it becomes important, meaningful.

gesture(apt. 1)>gesture(apt. 2)>light goes on(apt.3)>sound

The artistic materials in a doll’s house is…… are multimedia in nature. If all the motion where made by the virtual humans it would be dance. If the sounds were used continually throughout, it would sound like a film score. Therefore, any motion, whether visual or aural is abstracted, isolated in a non-realistic manner so that their connection can be readily perceived by the viewer/listener. To further facilitate the order of these events, numbers appear in the work just before, and in the location where motion will occur.

a doll’s house is…… was created using Final Cut Pro, Poser and Bryce. High-end software was not used because I was not interested in how close I could get to a photorealistic look. I believe that digital software has it’s own look and feel. By not confusing it with a photograph enables the viewer to distance themselves from what they are looking at and become retrospective. It invites our reflection on the real world we live in and hopefully, for the viewer/listener to experience the phenomenon of reality in a changed way.

“…That’s why I find the work so powerful-because no art goes into our soul and grips it until all it’s techniques, it’s philosophical strategies, it’s finally detailed structures, have been boiled down and distilled and made simple. And Gwiazda has gotten to the essence..” Kyle Gann, liner notes, “…she’s walking…”

“magical…I was drawn ineluctably, ever more fascinated by the amount of unexpectedly beautiful detail and the relationships between them…“She’s Walking……” is a profound, acute observation on “those empty spots, those times in between”. Highly recommended “ Brian Olewnick, review Squid’s Ear “she’s walking……”
