My first works produced between 1979 and 1984 were marked by a fragmentation of language. This was a period of time when I felt the disintegration of language caused by the political and social changes initiated by the student riots in Paris during 1968. The spoken and written language which had been the source of inspiration for my work, was replaced by a layering of visual geometric symbols within a grid of mesh representing the multiplicity of opinions and meanings. The initial bombing of Iraq during the evening of 23rd of March, 2003 gave rise to this specific work. For me, this incomprehensible political action instigated a further displacement of language and understanding. Perhaps if we weave some forms from the heart, we might succeed in making a statement for friendship, understanding and tolerance.
