Title:

This photograph is from a series taken whilst in Thailand about 6 months after the Tsunami. I was there with a colleague who was researching the effect on small businesses, solo workers and indigenous entrepreneurs who worked for the tourist trade. The research focused on their treatment post-destruction as the redevelopers moved in to create a more ‘upscale’ tourist area. Although this photograph is taken in Bangkok, the relation is that this is where many of those who formerly worked on the beaches have ended up. Bangkok ‘urban shantytowns’ full of displaced peoples from villages and coastal areas now working for the building trade/whatever they can get. We talked to many former beach and tourist workers who had either moved, or were planning to. Many were leaving their families behind, or taking them to the cities in search of a living. The main problem now is that the cities cannot contain the sheer amount of people looking for work in unskilled labor.
